Charles Edward Holtzman STSC(SS)
STSC(SS) Charles Edward "Chuck" Holtzman, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and son, lost his fight with pancreatic cancer on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, at Capital Hospice in Arlington, Virginia. Charles was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 7, 1943 and was the only child of Morris and Rhea Holtzman. He was raised in Miami Beach, Florida where he met his wife, Ruth Lynn Warhaftig.
A 1961 graduate of Beach High, he joined the United States Navy, at 17, became a submarine sailor, serving extensively on diesel, fast attack & fleet ballistic missile submarines, including SS-408, SS-315, SS-522, SSN-649, SSBN-598, SSN-673, and SSBN-627. He raised two daughters, Wendy and Michele.
Chuck qualified in submarines on the USS Sealion (SS-315) in 1964 and was a STC(SS) when he left the Navy.
Retiring from active duty after 22 years of service as a Chief Petty Officer, Chuck joined General Electric Power Generation Systems and moved from Charleston, SC to Montclair, VA. In 1984, he continued to serve the Navy as a government civilian at Naval Sea Systems Command in Crystal City. Chuck provided submarine In-Service Engineering support for Performance Monitoring Team operations, pierside facility management, Combat/Sonar System engineering and Advanced Seal Delivery System vehicle electric power storage systems. He retired from NAVSEA in 2004, and was the scheduler for the Qwest Communications Technical Support services section in Chantilly, VA for several years.
Chuck is survived by his wife of 43 years, Ruth; two daughters and their husbands, Wendy and David Golden, and Michele and Jeffrey Stark; and their four grandchildren, Benjamin, Samuel, and Vivian Golden, and Michael Stark.

Charles E. Holtzman, Navy chief petty officer, dies at 68

Charles E. Holtzman, 68, a Navy chief petty officer and submariner who retired in 1982 and then spent 20 years as a Navy Department civilian, died Jan. 18 at Capital Hospice in Arlington. He had pancreatic cancer.
The death was confirmed by his wife, Ruth Holtzman.
Charles Edward Holtzman, known as Chuck, was born in Philadelphia and raised in Miami Beach. He began his active-duty career in 1961 and was a Vietnam War veteran.
He settled in the Washington area in 1983 and, though classes at Quantico Marine Base, received a bachelor’s degree from Park University in Missouri in the mid-1980s.
From 1984 to 2004, he did submarine-related engineering work at Naval Sea System Command in Arlington County’s Crystal City area. He then spent a few years as a scheduler for the Qwest Communications technical support services in Chantilly. He was a Dumfries resident.
His memberships included Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and Jewish War Veterans. His avocations included racquetball.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Ruth Warhaftig Holtzman of Dumfries; two daughters, Wendy Golden of Fairfax County and Michele Stark of Vienna; and four grandchildren.
