McCall, ID Passed away on 7/12/2020 Cold war submarine veteran, Bret Lynn Stauts. Bret was born March 22, 1963 in Reno, Nevada to Janet (Blakely) and Frank Stauts. Bret graduated from Burlington-Edison High School in June of 1982 and joined his father in Annapolis, MD where he attended junior college for 2 years. His sense of adventure and a desire to see more of the world took hold and he decided to follow in his father's footsteps and join the Navy. He chose the Submarine Service and following completion of Boot Camp headed off to Fort Lauderdale, FL for training as a machinist mate on nuclear fast attack submarines. After completing his training, he was assigned to the USS Flying Fish where he served for four years. During his time in the Navy Bret was also trained as a certified US Navy Diver. He made several deployments on the Flying Fish to the Mediterranean Sea, North and South Atlantic and then to Bremerton, WA via the Panama Canal for a periodic ships overhaul. Bret was a key member of the ship’s crewhe was responsible for maintenance of the ship’s diesel power plant which provided an emergency back-up for the nuclear power system in addition to his other duties as a machinist mate and the ship’s only diver.
