Barry James Yerdon Sr.


Born March 5, 1957 - Eternal Patrol August 7, 2019

Cold War Submariner Barry James Yerdon Sr., 62, of Nelliston, NY, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at Bassett Health Care in Cooperstown, NY.

Barry was born in Niskayuna, NY on March 5, 1957, a son of the late Walter and Joyce Herron Yerdon. He attended school in Canajoharie, NY.

Mr. Yerdon served in the US Navy for 20 years retiring as a Senior Chief E-8. He served in the Submarine Service and was trained as a Submarine Sonar Advanced Maintenance Technician and a Basic Maintenance Technician. He served aboard the USS Flying Fish, USS Gato, USS Omaha, the USS Ethan Allen, along with a short stint on the USS Trepang. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor, HawaiiGroton, CT; Norfolk, VA; and Syracuse, NY. He received 2 National Defense Medals, 2 Navy Commendation Medals, A Meritorious Unit Commendation, 2 Navy Achievement Medals and an Artic Service Ribbon. His family sacrificed so much while he was in the service. He was a true patriot and was proud of his service.

Mr. Yerdon was a helpful and humble man. He was a jokester and always cared for others. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Mr. Yerdon is survived by his wife Catherine Faye Durham Yerdon as well as his fur babies, Walter and Joyce, of Nelliston. They were married on September 12, 1981. Survivors also include his beloved children, Shawnna M. Yerdon of Nelliston, NY; Barry J (Rachel) Yerdon Jr. of Sprakers, NY; and Kareena C. (Steven) Smith of Canajoharie, NY. Cherished grandchildren, Zimra A. Trant, Dameon L. Trant, Ziva F. Dimon, Barry J. Yerdon III, Henry Nicholas Yerdon, Hayden A. Yerdon, Joseph G. Smith, Rosabella G. Smith. Also, his siblings Brian Yerdon, Brent (Tina) Yerdon and Jinni (Dean) Blair . Several nieces, nephews, cousins, military family and friends also survive.

Besides his parents, Mr. Yerdon was predeceased by his Mother and Father- in-law, Rosa Faye and Anthony Falzarano.
